Networking and Development for New York City Arts Professionals Under 35

Emerging Leaders of New York Arts (ELNYA) is the newest link in ABC/NY continuum of leadership development. The group aims to bring together local, young arts administrators to discuss challenges specific to their field and generation. Our events are designed to help build the contacts, skills, and knowledge of arts professional under the age of 35 or with less than five years experience in the field. By focusing on this specific demographic we can empower associates, assistants, and junior level staff to explore ideas and potential they may not have opportunity to with their day-to-day responsibilities.

Our activities vary from casual networking happy hours to more content-based panel conversations and peer-to-peer dialogues which we call Creative Conversations. Our book club reads professional and leadership development titles and meets quarterly. ELNYA hosts a listserv through which we discuss issues relevant to young arts administrators and announce upcoming events. We welcome suggestions for future events and are actively seeking opportunities to partner with arts organizations interested in areas such as succession planning, new media, emerging art forms, and young patrons. ELNYA is also part of a larger network of Emerging Leader groups across the country facilitated by Americans for the Arts. To learn more about participating in national Emerging Leaders conferences and listserv, please visit the national Emerging Leaders website.

CREATIVE CONVERSATION “Dearth of Directors: What the Leadership Vacuum Means to Us”
While nonprofit arts organizations struggle to keep up with a rapidly shifting economic, social, and political climate, we, the “emerging leaders,” face challenges of navigating these numerous changes in the field as well as increased opportunities to further our own careers. For a variety of reasons, the number of executive director position vacancies in our organizations is rapidly increasing. Are we ready to face this leadership crisis? What are the practical aspects of taking over a directorship and running an organization? As leaders, how do we foster an environment and lay the foundation for non-profit arts organizations to continue and thrive even after we’ve transitioned out? Conversation Leaders: Tim Cynova & Heather Ruth. Please R.S.V.P. to elnya@artsandbusiness-ny.org
