2008 Series: New Framework for the Changing Face of America
Forums I and II: RenGen: Renaissance Generation—The Rise of the Cultural Consumer and What It Means to Your Business
Featuring Patricia Martin, author of the book RenGen: Renaissance Generation—The Rise of the Cultural Consumer and What It Means to Your Business.
- How do I speak to a broader audience when customers want to be treated as individuals?
- How do I build community when competition is ever more intense?
- How do I forge relationships with diverse audiences in a culture undergoing gale force change?
Rich with hands-on advice and in-depth insights into the psyche of the cultural consumer, author and cultural analyst Patricia Martin helps business, government, civic, and arts leaders answer those questions. She offers lessons from cutting-edge innovators who are tapping the power of the cultural consumer and, in the process, winning the hearts and minds of the RenGen.
This forum series looks at the forces reshaping our society and our economy, and how organizations and people can thrive in this period of disruptive change. The RenGen, short for renaissance generation, is a movement created by the confluence of art, technology, entertainment and business that has as its center a powerful new player: the cultural consumer.
Patricia Martin defines a growing stratum of Americans who thrive on information and ideas to fuel their creativity and shows how it will drive the next wave of innovation. This cohort crosses racial, ethnic, and age boundaries and represents the next wave of thought leaders. Martin will present in 11 cities identified by Americans for the Arts and the MetLife Foundation. A follow-up forum will be held in each city so that local participants can further develop concepts and action items arising from the first forum with Martin.
In the first forum, Martin’s presentation, based on her new book, RenGen: Renaissance Generation, gives us a provocative new way to think about change. Weaving images and storytelling with hard-hitting research, Martin traces the fundamental theme that runs through seemingly unrelated changes in our civilization: that the past 50 years of American life is not an endless downward spiral. These seemingly disruptive forces are actually a prelude to a renaissance.
As the RenGen gathers force in our society, it will have huge impact on how we live and work. This growing segment will determine how the workplace is organized, which products will succeed or fail, which urban areas will flourish, and which institutions will thrive or be rendered irrelevant.
