Frequently Asked Questions

Cultural Tourism Initiative Grant Program

Guidelines - How to Apply - Grantees - Frequently Asked Questions - Technical Assistance

  1. Can I still apply if my organization is not a NYSCA grantee?
The Lead Applicant must be a NYSCA grantee. If your arts organization does not currently receive funding from NYSCA, then you should partner with an organization that meets this requirement. Only the lead applicant must meet this requirement; there is no requirement of other arts and tourism partners.
  2. Am I still eligible to apply if I receive NYSCA funds through their de-centralization program?
As a general rule we do not fund such cases, however if your organization is the only appropriate Lead Applicant, exceptions may be made with staff approval. Contact ABC/NY for more information.
  3. Why is it necessary for my group to have a Primary Tourism Partner?
Tourism agencies can help you provide the necessary data and tracking of tourists in your area, which is one of the requirements for the grant. Tourism partners are also helpful when marketing and promoting the project. The tourism partner must provide evidence of compliance with the guidelines and criteria for this initiative.
  4. Is it necessary for the lead tourism partner to be my local Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) or Tourism Promotion Agency (TPA)?
No. Other tourism partners are allowed, such as tour operators, motorcoach companies, receptive tour operators, hotels, airlines, train lines, travel agents, tourism consultants—just to name some examples. It is recommended that you alert and consult with your local CVB or TPA about your project, however, so they may aid you with regional promotion. If you find an outside tourism entity as Primary Tourism Partner, try to bring your local agency in as an additional Partner Organization.
  5. Can my Primary Tourism Partner contribute to my budget?
Yes. We encourage some financial investment from the tourism partner. This usually is in the form of cash; however any payment made directly for materials contributed to this project can be included as part of the cash match (e.g., the tourism partner buys an ad to solely promote the project, the tourism partner pays the printing costs for a project brochure, etc.)
  6. Can I partner with groups outside of my immediate area?
Yes. Partnerships that engage multiple counties and are regional in nature are encouraged.
  7. Can I use funds for the development and printing of a brochure, video, or other marketing materials?
Yes, however such expenses must be part of a comprehensive tourism promotion plan. The program is not intended to fund ongoing marketing pieces, only specific marketing pieces designed for this project.
  8. Can I use the funds for artist fees?
No. This is a cultural tourism and promotional program designed for maximum economic impact. We recommend researching NYSCA programs that fund artistic work.
  9. Can I allocate funds that are pledged towards this project, but haven’t been received?
Yes. The Project Budget form of the Grant Application will ask you to specify whether funds have been pledged or received. Any party that has pledged a donation toward your project should submit an official letter (on organizational letterhead) stating the amount, and if applicable how the funds are to be spent. Please include these letters with the Project Budget Form.
